Notation

  1. Or bars will have different meanings depending on the context
    1. Or bars for the start menu

Example: "start | settings | services"

      This means:

      1. Click the start button. This is often in the lower left portion of the display on the task bar. If the auto-hide feature is on you won't see it until you position the mouse there.
      2. The start menu will pop up and you will see settings. Select settings
      3. This will pop up a window with icons. One of the icons is labeled "services". Double left mouse click that icon.
    2. Or bars in an application

These bars just refer to consecutive menu entries that you select. Here is an example from Microsoft Word 2000: "Table | Select | Table".

      1. Observe the menu bar and select the Table menu (either with the mouse or with ALT A).
      2. Click "Select" (or the shortcut "c"). Observe the fly-out.
      3. Now select table.
